Best Paper Trading Apps in India (2026) — An Honest Comparison
Comparing India's paper trading apps for NSE/BSE options practice — PaperTrade Nifty, Bank Nifty and Sensex by Altriga, Sensibull, StockGro and TradingView — with real pros, cons and a decision guide.
Paper trading — practising with simulated money before risking real capital — is the single cheapest way to survive your first year of options trading. India's NSE options market is unforgiving: most first-time options traders lose money, and almost all of them skipped the practice phase. Here is an honest comparison of the apps we'd actually recommend in 2026, including the ones we built — with their limitations stated as plainly as their strengths.
The shortlist
| App | Practice focus | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PaperTrade Nifty | NIFTY 50 options | Free | Beginners practising index options on a ₹10L virtual portfolio |
| Paper Trade Bank Nifty | BANKNIFTY options | Free | High-volatility index practice |
| Paper Trade Sensex | BSE SENSEX options | Free | Practising on BSE's flagship index |
| Sensibull | NSE options (full chain) | Free tier + paid plans | Traders with a real broker account bridging into live trades |
| StockGro | Multi-asset social trading | Free + paid leagues | Gamified learning and social competition |
| TradingView Paper Trading | Global markets, chart-based | Free tier + paid charts | Technical traders who live in charts |
(Feature sets and pricing change — check each listing before deciding.)
What each app is actually good at
The PaperTrade family (Nifty, Bank Nifty, Sensex) — full disclosure first: we built these at Altriga Technologies. Each app gives you a simulated ₹10 lakh portfolio on a single index's options chain, so you learn one market deeply instead of ten shallowly. The interface is deliberately simple: place option buys and sells, watch your P&L, repeat daily. Honest limitations: options only (no equity or futures), no broker integration, no advanced Greeks/analytics, and each app covers one index — if you want everything under one roof, they're not it. They're built for the absolute beginner whose failure mode is complexity, not lack of features.
Sensibull — the most complete options-practice ecosystem for NSE, tightly integrated with real brokers like Zerodha. Strategy builder, payoff charts, and a path from virtual to live orders. Limitations: the good parts sit behind paid plans, and you're inside a broker-linked flow — heavier than a pure practice sandbox.
StockGro — social-style paper trading with leagues and leaderboards; motivating if competition drives you. Limitations: the gamified format can teach over-trading; leaderboards reward risk-taking more than process.
TradingView Paper Trading — superb charting and global instruments. Limitations: Indian index options practice is not its focus; option-chain work (strikes, premiums, expiry behaviour) is clumsy compared to NSE-native apps.
How to choose in one question
Ask: what exactly am I practising? If it's index options premium behaviour — the actual thing most Indian retail traders blow up on — start with a dedicated options simulator: PaperTrade Nifty for NIFTY 50, Bank Nifty, or Sensex, all free. If you already have a broker account and want strategy tooling as you transition live, Sensibull. If competition keeps you consistent, StockGro. If you're a chart-first trader across markets, TradingView.
A 30-day practice routine that actually works
- Week 1: only buy one lot of ATM options on one index. No selling, no hedges. Learn premium decay by watching it.
- Week 2: add stop-losses to every position. Track every trade in a journal.
- Week 3: practise spreads (bull call / bear put) instead of naked direction bets.
- Week 4: review your journal — if you're not consistently green on paper, you would be bleeding real money. Repeat the month.
Graduate to small real positions only after four consecutive green paper weeks — and even then, one lot.
